ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UT-TSU Agricultural Extension Service at Lane Agri-Park recommends homeowners choose four-season trees like hornbeam for winter beauty and fall color; they suggest bringing soil samples for testing and consulting Master Gardeners at the Winter-Spring Farmers Market (315 John R. Rice Blvd.) on Friday mornings, 8:00 a.m. to noon.  WGNS

FINANCE NEWS

  • AAA reported that gas prices averaged $2.50 today, which is 7 cents lower than one month ago and 24 cents less than last year; experts expect modest shifts ahead, with +steady oil supply+ keeping prices low.  Rutherford County Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting January 1, 2026, debt resolution service providers must secure a license through TDCI to serve Tennessee consumers under the new Debt Resolution Services Act. The regulation establishes consumer protection rules and imposes fines up to $5,000 per violation (with a $100,000 cap) for noncompliance.  Rutherford County Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospitals in Middle Tennessee report high flu cases, rising RSV, and a slow increase in COVID as doctors warn of a triple-virus season, urging families to get tested early and seek care if symptoms worsen (testing is key to proper treatment).  WGNS
  • Murfreesboro residents will attend the American Cancer Society’s Relay First Lap kickoff on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Oaklands Mansion, where they meet at 12:30 p.m. to begin a symbolic walk in support of cancer research and patient services — with funds returning to local families.  WGNS
  • Starting in March 2026, Vanderbilt LifeFlight will take flight services in-house through a phased plan at nine bases by June + it will maintain full control of patient care. Locally, LifeFlight Number 5 at Murfreesboro Municipal Airport, staffed by about 11 to 12 members, will continue serving Rutherford County.  WGNS

  • Developers of One East College revised plans for the mixed-use project at College and Church, expanding condo, office & retail space and repurposing the old First United Methodist Church into a live venue.   • Titans quarterback Cam Ward said his sprained AC joint does not need surgery after he injured his shoulder during the game against the Jaguars on Jan. 4. He will focus on rehab through the offseason as he prepares to return next season.  The Daily News Journal
  • MTSU guard Alec Oglesby earned Conference USA Player of the Week after a record-setting effort this week — the league announced his honor in Dallas.  WGNS
  • MTSU men’s basketball swept its CUSA opponents by defeating Louisiana Tech & Sam Houston State during a two-game homestand at the Murphy Center on January 4 and 5.  MTSU Sidelines
