- ➤ The Relay First Lap for the 2026 Relay For Life of Murfreesboro will take place on Saturday, Jan. 10 at Oaklands Mansion, 900 N. Maney Ave, starting at 12:30 p.m. Community members can buy luminarias and enjoy light refreshments as they gear up for the main event on June 12. Murfreesboro.com
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The January 2026 special edition of In the City, hosted by Michael Linn White and Steve Burris, looks back at 2025’s top stories including Buc-ee’s groundbreaking celebration, the Journey Home ribbon-cutting (1207 Old Salem Rd), and the Transit Center opening at 324 New Salem Hwy. It airs on CityTV, Facebook, and YouTube throughout the month. City of Murfreesboro
- ➤ Stones River National Battlefield and Stones River National Cemetery are launching the Stories of Service and Sacrifice campaign to honor 250 veterans buried at the cemetery. Beginning in January the park will share one veteran story daily on the National Park Service website and social media (community members are invited to submit related photos, letters, and memories). - ➤ The Discovery Center at Murfree Spring will showcase Storyland: A Trip Through Childhood Favorites™ starting Saturday, Jan. 24. The traveling exhibit brings seven interactive, picture book-themed environments to life until Sunday, May 3, and is included with general admission (free for museum members). Murfreesboro.com
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Tennessee State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation approved new funding of over $482,000 for conservation, research, and public access projects that will support stable turkey numbers in Rutherford County. The awards — matched by more than $28 million in partner funds — help secure local turkey habitats. WGNS
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Murfreesboro has begun upgrading traffic signals along Northfield Boulevard and Rutherford Boulevard — a $5.35 million project that introduces sensor-based timing and intermittent work zones. Approved by city council in March 2025, the project will ease congestion and reduce emissions as construction continues. FOX 17

- ➤ TwelveStone Health Partners has partnered with healthcare technology company Tennr to streamline referral processing and reduce delays for chronic care patients in Murfreesboro. The collaboration was announced today and aims to help patients get scheduled faster, easing administrative burdens on families and providers. WGNS
- ➤ Rutherford County Health Department is hosting Quit Smoking Week now through Jan. 9 with a cessation program that offers motivational calls, free nicotine replacement, and enrollment in the Tennessee Tobacco Quit Line (615-898-7880) to help residents build healthier habits. WGNS

- ➤ MTSU graduate student Alec Oglesby was named CUSA Player of the Week after scoring 12 points in a Dec. 31 road game against Houston — he later set a career-high 25 points in the new year opener against LA Tech with eight 3-pointers that contributed to a school record. Murfreesboro Post
- ➤ MTSU freshman guard Blair Baugus earned CUSA Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, Jan. 5 after posting double-doubles in wins over Kennesaw State and Jax State.
