Residents are encouraged to honor local law enforcement today with gestures like wearing blue and sending thank you notes as groups such as COPS support National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day; local agencies including the sheriff's office, highway patrol, and Murfreesboro police join the call.
The NAACP Murfreesboro Branch will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Saturday, Jan.
17 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Middle Tennessee State University’s James Union Building. Guest speakers and awards plus the Jerry Anderson Hero Award and NAACP Humanitarian Award will honor community leaders.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky opened applications for its Torch Awards for Ethics and Spark Awards, with entries due by Feb.
12, to honor ethical leadership across local businesses.
🎓 Education
Principal Sumatra Drayton completed a restoration of 1930s graduation photos that show Holloway High’s role as a school for Black students during segregation.
The school now displays the restored pictures for students (and community members) to learn about its rich history.
Elizabeth McPhee, wife of MTSU President Sidney McPhee, died Jan.
8 after a brief illness; the 72-year-old educator and volunteer influenced thousands in our community and memorial arrangements will be shared when available.
🏛️ Government
Middle Tennessee roads will experience scheduled lane closures from January 11 to 17 for bridge repairs, grading, and utility work on I-40, I-65, and local streets.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead & follow posted detours through all active work zones.
On Jan. 8, Mayor Shane McFarland recognized Sgt. Mark Wood with the *STARS award* for his compassionate work with the Homeless Outreach Support Team when he assisted residents in need.
🏈 Sports
Matt Kriesky resigned as Blackman's football coach after three seasons, ending his record-setting run that led the team to its best season yet.
He will finish teaching at Blackman and re-evaluate his career after the school year — setting the stage for a new coach.
Middle Tennessee Athletics announced the Great Blue Raider Baby Race, set for Saturday, Jan.
17 at the Glass House. Babies must be registered by Thursday, Jan. 15 at 11:59 p.m. and be accompanied by two supervisors to safely participate at halftime during the Blue Raiders game.
Coach Matt Kriesky resigned as head football coach at Blackman High School after a three-year run that included a 12-2 season and a state semifinal appearance; he stepped away to spend more time with his family.
The school will start its search for a new coach immediately.
