  • The State of the Child 2025 report from the Tennessee Commission on Children & Youth shows that median center-based infant care costs reached $13,925 in 2025, exceeding in-state tuition, amid rising food needs after a SNAP pause and a record high child death rate, even as test scores improved.  The Daily News Journal

  • The Murfreesboro Planning Commission approved plans to redevelop the former YMCA on North Thompson Lane into a UFC gym & restaurants, with a summer completion expected. The project will provide new local leisure and dining options.  WGNS

  • Parks and Rec Trivia Night will take place at Middle Ground Brewing (2484 Old Fort Pkwy) on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m. Free trivia welcomes families, with gift cards for the top three teams.  Rutherford County Source

  • Middle Tennessee State University announced on Jan. 8 that its First Lady, Elizabeth McPhee, passed away Thursday (brief illness) at age 72; memorial arrangements are pending.  Rutherford County Source

  • Federal tax season will open Jan. 26 for local residents who file only federal returns. The IRS requires using the new Schedule 1-A to claim deductions for overtime, tip income and car loan interest.  The Daily News Journal

  • Mayor Shane McFarland recognized Murfreesboro Police Sgt. Mark Wood with a STARS award on Thursday, Jan. 8 for his work with the H.O.S.T. unit aiding the homeless. Wood, who joined the force in 2002+ has repeatedly stepped up to support citizens in need.  Murfreesboro.com
