  • Barnabas Vision continues to provide free winter coats & Encouragement Bags at its office on 141 MTCS Road for residents in need; callers can check availability at (615) 556-5134. The nonprofit also seeks donations of hand warmers to support those facing cold weather.  WGNS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • United Communications advises local households to run speed tests and address wireless dead zones as older routers struggle with more than 20 connected smart devices (ranging from streaming to video calls) and recommends upgrading to multi-gig fiber or modern routers for reliable internet.  Rutherford County Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Smoky Mountain Logistics will close its Lebanon facility on Feb. 28, affecting 145 nonunion employees. Local workforce officials will help the workers find new job opportunities and support services.  FOX 17

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School went into lockdown after third grade students mistakenly reported a gun sighting behind the school on Maymont Drive, but police confirmed a miscommunication involving a 13 year old was the source of the incident + the lockdown was quickly lifted.  WGNS
  • Discovery School is accepting applications for grades K–6 for the 2026–27 year until Feb. 1, with 60 seats available for kindergarten and limited openings in other grades—families should apply early to secure a spot.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City offices, most facilities, and transit will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19 for MLK Day; garbage routes will shift with pickup on Jan. 20. A MLK Day march starts at noon at Central Magnet School and a blood drive runs from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at Patterson Park Community Center.  WGNS

  • Dietitian Chelsea Leblanc shared healthy eating advice at Piggly Wiggly on Dickerson Pike nearly two weeks into the new year (she advised pairing meat with beans to stretch meals and recommended store-brand items to cut costs).  NewsChannel 5

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tennessee Titans interviewed Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Jan. 13 for their head coach vacancy. Spagnuolo (66) brings four Super Bowl titles as coordinator and his experience with the team's leadership is one factor among several in the search.  The Daily News Journal
  • Rockvale High School's football team was placed on a two-year probation after a recruiting violation involving contact with a prospective student-athlete was self-reported on Dec. 11. The program will cut spring practices by two days, cancel one scrimmage, and require coach retraining as part of TSSAA oversight through mid-2027.  WGNS
  • Blackman beat Riverdale in non-district play on Tuesday at Blackman as the boys won 64-39 and the girls won 65-27, marking their ninth straight win. Coach Barry Wortman said using reserves helped the team prepare for future contests.  Murfreesboro Post
  • At Page’s wrestling meet, freshman Carson Gambill secured a 12-0 major decision over Summit’s Charles Blass at 106 lbs to lead his team to their biggest dual victory in six seasons; his win helped overcome a 21-point deficit for a 37-36 finish.  Murfreesboro Post
