COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Around 500 community members gathered on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Belle Aire Baptist Church to honor Elizabeth McPhee after she passed on Jan. 8 following a brief illness. The service featured heartfelt tributes and a display of her cherished hat collection (a nod to her love of fashion).  MTSU Sidelines

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Verizon is offering affected customers a $20 credit for the 10-hour Jan. 14 outage that disrupted service nationwide, including in Murfreesboro. Customers can claim the credit via the myVerizon app, and business owners will be contacted directly.  The Daily News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers are considering House Bill 793 to let schools verify legal status and deny enrollment or charge tuition to undocumented students. The bill, passed by the Senate last year, awaits further guidance on federal funding and could face legal challenges if revived.  The Daily News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • MTSU men's tennis is opening its spring season today at the Adams Tennis Complex with a doubleheader against Lipscomb and Tennessee Tech as they pursue a seventh straight CUSA championship. Coach Jimmy Borendame said the team features eight new players and will host the 2026 CUSA championship April 15-19.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Will Hester has been named Blackman High School’s new head football coach, returning to his roots in Rutherford County after a stint in administration. He will serve part-time now + full-time mid-February as he replaces Matt Kriesky after a 2025 season that saw Blackman reach the Class 6A semifinals.  The Daily News Journal
  • MTSU club hockey forward Matthew Siciliano got an ACHA waiver to play in the spring, which keeps the Blue Raiders top line intact + the team will travel to Lynchburg on Jan. 17 for a matchup against Liberty University.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Middle Tennessee lost 61-48 to Louisiana Tech at the Thomas Assembly Center Thursday night, as the team struggled with offense and free throws. The Blue Raiders will face Sam Houston on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Murfreesboro Post
