- ➤ Since Jan. 23, The Journey Home and Cold Patrol have run the Coldest Nights shelter for 55 to 60 people nightly at First Baptist Church and nearby sites to guard against frost exposure. The ministry served 70 meals on Jan. 26 + will soon open 10 interim units for families. The Daily News Journal
- ➤ MTE crews worked to restore power on Monday, Jan. 26 after ice-coated tree limbs knocked down lines, leaving about 8,179 customers without service. Homeowners must hire licensed electricians (with required permits) to repair damages before power can be reconnected. WGNS
- ➤ NES worked overnight on Jan.26 to restore power to 60,000 customers after freezing rain and ice damaged equipment, though about 175,000 customers remain without power. - ➤ Friday night, a devastating fire destroyed the home, possessions, and beloved dogs of Fire Rescue Captain Tyler Benefield and his wife Harlee; Harlee escaped with only her clothes thanks to a working smoke alarm — county officials ask the community to support the couple as they rebuild. - ➤ A winter storm that brought heavy snowfall has made roads dangerous, which may delay mail and package deliveries this week. USPS, FedEx, Amazon & UPS reported potential delays while state crews work to clear the roads with no set timeline. The Daily News Journal
- ➤ TVA began repairs in Mississippi after Winter Storm Fern damaged transmission lines on Jan. 26, affecting dozens of local power companies; the utility said that while colder temperatures are expected to boost power demand, customers will not be asked to cut back on usage (a change from past winters).
