ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A winter storm that hit Middle Tennessee Saturday left dangerous conditions with freezing temperatures, power outages, and 21 weather-related deaths, and the state remains under emergency declaration as officials work to restore power (with over 4,500 NES customers still affected).  FOX 17

  • Residents near Veterans Parkway and the new Publix shopping center noticed Tijuana Flats closed — new owners will remodel the interior and plan to reopen the restaurant in 3-4 months later this year.  Murfreesboro.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The City Schools Foundation announced Rev. Martha Touchton as the 2026 Excellence in Education honoree — the annual event will honor her 25+ years of service and school support. The celebration is scheduled for Friday, March 20 at Macca Villa at Riverside.  Murfreesboro.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A winter storm has caused 21 weather-related deaths and left over 50,000 in the Greater Nashville area without power. Emergency housing from Airbnb.org + local groups is available as low wind chills are expected through Feb. 2.  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Murfreesboro's Community Development Department expanded its Affordable Housing Assistance program to help first-time homebuyers meet HUD guidelines by raising down payment support from $10,000 to up to $50,000. Applicants can join the in-person homebuyer training workshop at the Municipal Airport on Feb. 11 and submit applications by Feb. 27.  WGNS
  • The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Unit is offering free blue envelopes for autistic drivers at 940 New Salem Highway. The envelopes (designed to signal that a driver needs extra time and support) help officers use clear communication during traffic stops.  WGNS

  • MTSU women's basketball won 81-58 over Western Kentucky on Saturday — a strong result as the Blue Raiders now prepare to travel to Springfield on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. for their next CUSA matchup.  Murfreesboro Post
