  • The Community Development Department, featured recently on ‘The Insider’ podcast, offered affordable housing assistance and homeowner rehabilitation programs for first-time homebuyers, while its Public Service Grants applications opened Jan. 26 and close Feb. 27 (with a workshop set for Feb. 11 at Municipal Airport) to support low-to-moderate income residents.  City of Murfreesboro

CULTURE NEWS

  • Popular YouTuber Markiplier debuts his feature film Iron Lung today at AMC Stones River 9 in Murfreesboro; the movie is adapted from an indie horror game and brings his unique horror storytelling to local theaters.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Oaklands Mansion is hosting A Valentine’s Evening on Saturday, Feb. 14 starting at 5:00 p.m. in Maney Hall. Guests can enjoy dining, dancing, cocktails and group lessons with reserved seating at 5:00, 6:30 or 8:00 p.m.  Rutherford County Source
  • Rutherford Ralph, the local groundhog, will appear at sunrise between 6:45 and 7:00 a.m. today and let residents know if six more weeks of winter are coming or if spring is near (a cherished tradition).  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU held its annual Spring Student Organization Fair at the Student Union, where students explored clubs, academic groups and special-interest organizations to build connections across campus.  Murfreesboro.com
  • A brutal winter storm caused widespread damage across Middle TN, forcing many districts to close; Rutherford County Schools will reopen today while some districts remain closed until Tuesday (Feb. 3).  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department has named Captain John Rutledge as its first full-time EMS Instructor and he will begin his role on Feb. 9. A lifelong Rutherford County resident with extensive emergency services experience, he is expected to boost training standards for local first responders.  Murfreesboro.com

  • Residents can vote for the TSSAA boys athlete of the week for Jan. 26-31. Voting closes at 2 p.m. on Feb. 5 (nominees include Blackman's Caden Avant, Eagleville's Camden Cole, Oakland's Malik Sanders, PCA's Peyton Applegate, Riverdale's Waymon West, Rockvale's Arden Lewis, and Smyrna's Kaden Matthews).  The Daily News Journal
