COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office announced a memorial service on Friday, Feb. 13 for longtime dispatcher Aaron Cope+ a 26-year veteran who provided calm guidance for deputies and citizens, with visitation at Woodfin Memorial Chapel from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Bethel United Methodist Church.  WGNS

CULTURE NEWS

  • MTSU’s Jazz Ensemble I will perform a free big band concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 at Hinton Music Hall in the Wright Music Building (1439 Faulkinberry Drive), playing classic swing and modern jazz pieces including works by Duke Ellington and a new arrangement by a student.  WGNS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A report by AAA (The Auto Club) shows Tennessee now ranks 8th for cheap gas with regular unleaded averaging $2.55 per gallon as of Monday, Feb. 9, while Murfreesboro drivers see about $2.57 and Williamson County drivers pay roughly $3.01.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle Tennessee schools have nominated five FBLA students for The Tennessean Student of the Week, and voting remains open until noon Feb. 12. Voters can choose the candidate who best represents future business leadership.  The Daily News Journal
  • Murfreesboro families can join a free workshop called 'How Do I Support My Neurodivergent Child?' on Monday, Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to noon at Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church, where therapist Courtney Maze will offer practical strategies for guiding parents and caregivers.  WGNS
  • At Middle Tennessee State University’s Special Collections (James E. Walker Library), students using funding from (URECA) tested 34 books from the 1800s and found toxic pigments like lead and chromium in 33 volumes; further tests will continue this semester.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a cold snap triggered a surge in emergency calls, Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue kept response times safe during icy conditions. Contractors (currently surveying the land) are preparing to build a new fire hall in front of future Veterans Park to better serve the growing community.  WGNS

HEALTH NEWS

  • TriStar Health announced today a $150,000 donation to help Middle Tennesseans impacted by Winter Storm Fern, supporting organizations (United Way receiving $100,000, Hands On Nashville $25,000, The Branch $25,000) in coordinating recovery efforts.  Rutherford County Source

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The Practice Room, the only Ashtanga Yoga studio in Murfreesboro, opened in 2025 and offers both in-person and online classes taught using slow, safe sequences. Located downtown at 10B North Public Square (Suite 206), the studio also provides sliding scale pricing through the Karuna Foundation.  Rutherford County Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lebron Ferguson resigned as head football coach at Providence Christian Academy; his resignation takes effect at the end of the 2025-26 school year. He built the team from scratch and led them to the state semifinals in 2025, and the school has formed a search committee for his replacement.  The Daily News Journal
  • Monday, Feb. 9, TSWA released local high school basketball rankings. Eagleville Boys held the top spot with a flawless record of 20 to 0 — Providence Christian Academy and Middle Tennessee Christian also showed strong play as the postseason approaches.  WGNS
  • Wilson Central hosted the TSSAA Region 5-AA wrestling championships for boys and girls on Saturday afternoon—top finishers from each weight class qualified for next week’s Class AA sectional tournament at Page.  Murfreesboro Post
