COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jenny Harrison of Rion's Flowers, Coffee & Gifts announced that the business will close as her worsening health now requires a walker & Mayo Clinic visits. She thanked customers for years of support and said the shop will remain open a few more days at 117 S. Academy St., Murfreesboro.  WGNS
  • Due to tonight's extreme cold, the Coldest Nights Emergency Shelter opens for those in need in Murfreesboro. Men check in at First Baptist Church and women at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with dinner served at 6 p.m. and doors open from 7 to 9 p.m.  NewsChannel 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rutherford County Schools are not running 41 buses today due to a contractor’s lost insurance and will excuse affected student absences; the school board meets at 5:30 p.m. today at the central administration office (in Murfreesboro) to address the issue.  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A judge ruled that the planned 70-foot vertical expansion at Middle Point Landfill is on hold until BFI follows regional review steps. The decision, made Friday, ensures that nearby residents can voice their concerns.  FOX 17

SPORTS NEWS

  • Statewide TSSAA boys basketball rankings were released on Feb. 23, with Eagleville jumping from 12th to first in Division I by scoring 120 points while Upperman led Division 3A at 119. Local sportswriters, including those at the Daily News Journal, cast votes that highlighted key shifts ahead of season’s end.  The Daily News Journal
  • Two local sports legends were named to the TN Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026. Former MTSU coach Kermit Davis and Blackman High graduate David Price received the honor after long careers in basketball and baseball.  WGNS
  • Local sports fans are invited to vote for the top TSSAA Division I girls basketball player in the postseason — nominees include players from Blackman's, Cannon County, Central Magnet, Eagleville, La Vergne and others.  The Daily News Journal

  • Local high school boys basketball fans can vote for the top Division I player to watch in the postseason until noon on Feb. 27.
