CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents in Murfreesboro can watch a rare planetary conjunction as Venus and Saturn appear close together in the western sky after sunset on March 8 (a telescope may enhance views, especially of Saturn's rings).  The Daily News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU announced Friday, Mar. 6 that Kennedy Garrett has been elected SGA president for the new academic year after serving as vice president. She will focus on securing student organization resources and uniting campus plus revising election roles.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Murfreesboro City Schools announced Sonya Cox as the new principal at Erma Siegel Elementary — the former principal at Cason Lane Academy returns to where she once worked as an instructional coach.  Rutherford County Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Most hummingbirds remain on the coast, but they will begin arriving in Tennessee between late March and mid-May. Residents can attract the Ruby-throated hummingbird by planting red native wildflowers or using a sugar-water solution in feeders in suburban areas.  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Shane McFarland recognized Officer Patrick Nemorin with a STARS award on March 5 for his consistent service to local families. The officer is noted for regularly checking on children (bringing birthday gifts) and strengthening trust in the community.  Rutherford County Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • MTSU is aiming for a top-4 seed in the CUSA Basketball Tournament starting Tuesday, March 10 at Propst Arena in Huntsville after the regular season ended today with Liberty clinching No. 1 seed.   • Siegel boys basketball coach Matt Rigsby resigned on March 6 after five seasons with 81 wins to focus on his family. He will continue teaching at Siegel as the school begins its search for a new coach.  The Daily News Journal
  • MTSU Blue Raiders club hockey recorded an 8-2 win against Vanderbilt's Commodores on Mar. 4 at Bridgestone Arena, drawing over 1,200 fans and boosting the team's standing as it prepares for national tournament pool play starting Mar. 18 in St. Louis.  MTSU Sidelines
