BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Construction has begun on an In-N-Out Burger at the Clari Park Development on Medical Center Parkway in Murfreesboro; In-N-Out Vice President Mike Abbate said the restaurant usually opens about nine months after construction starts even though no opening date has been set yet. The California burger chain, which already has 415 locations—will open 35 stores in Tennessee including sites in Hendersonville and Franklin—plans to move its corporate offices to Nashville. - ➤ A new exhibit called 'Retro Rewind: Treasures from the Historic Costume Collection' is on display at Todd Art Gallery at MTSU through Saturday, March 22. The exhibit—curated by TXMD students—shows iconic 1980s fashion including pieces donated by Cecil Elrod III. WGNS
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Rutherford County reported a 3% unemployment rate in January and now ranks as the state’s second lowest jobless area—Williamson County is lower at 2.8% while most other counties saw increases from December 2024. In county cities, Smyrna dropped to 2.9% while Murfreesboro stayed at 3.1%. WGNS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Media and Entertainment will celebrate its first motion design graduate this May as Sarah Varni—its first student since the concentration started in fall 2022—completes a program that gives students practical experience with advanced technology in animation and film production. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting May 7, REAL ID-compliant licenses will be required for domestic flights and access to federal facilities since non-compliant IDs will not be accepted. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security advises residents to apply early if they plan to travel as processing can take up to 20 business days — fees differ for new applications and renewals. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ On March 13, 2025, MTSU’s men’s basketball team beat Louisiana Tech 77—75 in double overtime to reach the Conference USA semifinals. The Blue Raiders played three tournament games in three days and were set to face Jacksonville State on March 14 at 2:00 p.m. CDT. MTSU Sidelines
- ➤ Heritage beat South Gibson 36-29 in the Class 3A semifinal and will play Northview Academy at 4 p.m. on Saturday—injured star Carsyn Swaney did not finish the game after hurting her left ankle, and she will not play in the final. The Daily News Journal
- ➤ On Friday, the TSSAA girls basketball state tournament semifinals were held at the Murphy Center at MTSU with games running from 9:39 a.m. through 8:45 p.m. Teams in Classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A advanced a step closer to a state title and will compete in Saturday’s championships—fans are watching closely.
