COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Technology Engagement Center’s free seed library in Murfreesboro, located behind Hobgood Elementary School—part of the Rutherford County Library System—has already welcomed visitors who began collecting seeds 20 days before spring. Manager Kathleen Tyree said the center also provides computers, printers, gaming systems and more at 306 Minerva Dr.  WGNS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, Gov. Bill Lee, Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter and Barrett Firearms Manufacturing, Inc. officials announced the company will expand in Rutherford County with a new facility at 8808 Manchester Pike. The project will cost $76.4 million to create 183 jobs and serve as the main global firearms manufacturing site as well as the future U.S.-headquarters of its parent company.  Rutherford County Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Briana Mosley at Smyrna High School added goats to the agriculture program to give urban students hands-on experience with livestock care — a move that aligns classroom learning with practical tasks. Students will complete daily duties such as checking for general health, hoof trimming and administering vaccinations as part of the Career and Technical Education pathway.  Rutherford County Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A proposed Tennessee law will make it a crime to help move or hide people who are in the country without legal papers by making moving them illegally a big crime (Class E felony) and hiding them a smaller crime (Class A misdemeanor with a $1,000 fine per person). The bill passed its first stage and will be debated as supporters say it will fix border rules—critics fear it may hurt groups that help people.  FOX 17
  • At a March 4 meeting of the Rutherford County Public Works and Planning Committee, most speakers opposed the plan to expand Middle Point Landfill due to concerns over air, water and past TDEC violations — a few speakers supported the proposal for its potential cost savings.  The Daily News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hume-Fogg head coach Ross Fleming IV, a 2016 graduate, led his team with a strong senior class into an 18-game win streak at the state tournament at Murphy Center but they lost 54—40 to Upperman. Ty Cobb scored 28 points—helping Upperman win the quarterfinal game.  Murfreesboro Post
  • On March 15, MTSU women's basketball played Belmont Bruins in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament at the Curb Event Center at 6:30 p.m. CDT. The contest determined which team advanced to face the winner between Arizona and Northern Arizona + setting the stage for the next tournament round.  MTSU Sidelines
