COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today on WGNS Action Line, host Scott Walker interviewed board member Marcie Richmond and executive director Lois Barrett-Luke about Doors of Hope’s 12-month re-entry program that offers life skills training, job readiness support, counseling, and transitional housing—along with food, clothing, legal aid, and medical care to help women overcome addiction, homelessness, and incarceration. The program serves Rutherford County and is looking for community support to help more women rebuild their lives.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Riverdale High School held its 13th annual Brave the Shave fundraiser and raised nearly $23,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. More than 90 students, staff and community members took part after a school member was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (exceeding the $20,000 goal) (demonstrating strong local support).  Murfreesboro.com
  • Middle Tennessee State University held its annual Scholars Week that showed student research and projects and ended with a day of awards. The campus library has a new Family Study Room for students, staff and faculty with children — the room can be booked for up to three hours.  The Daily News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation will host a mobile household hazardous waste collection event at the Murfreesboro Solid Waste Department (4765 Florence Rd) Saturday April 5 from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Items such as cleaning fluids, pesticides, and lithium batteries are accepted, while ammunition and electronics should be disposed of elsewhere.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nashville meteorologist Bree Smith testified before a state House Criminal Justice Subcommittee last week after deepfakes produced explicit, AI-generated videos that harmed her reputation—she explained the challenges of removing the content. Tennessee lawmakers are moving forward with the ELVIS Act and Preventing Deep Fake Images Act to protect against further misuse of deepfake technology.  The Daily News Journal

  • On Saturday night, the medical community gathered at the Stones River Country Club for the 18th annual Rutherford County Gala that honored those who supported the hospital. Susan and Lee Moss won the Dr. Liz Rhea Philanthropist Award and the Murfreesboro Anesthesia Group earned the Physician Champion Award—guest speaker Inky Johnson told a strong story about hope and hard work.  WGNS
