  • Hillsboro native Michael Pippen, a Tennessee Tech engineering graduate, works at mission control on NASA's Artemis II mission today as it flies around the moon; he spent 10 years preparing and will soon join NASA's tie-cutting tradition (a badge of honor) for his new role.  NewsChannel 5

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Country Music Hall of Fame opened Connection, a new student and community art exhibition featuring posters created by MNPS students & Friends Life Community artists.   • Shacklett's Photography, a family-run archive at 105 S. Church St., celebrates the 25th anniversary of its popular Peter Rabbit’s Garden spring portrait set this week (a cherished local tradition). The studio invites the community to honor its historic legacy.  WGNS
  • Gentlemen Jim’s—a longtime pub on East Main Street that survived a fire three years ago—remains a local favorite with busy parking even on Christmas, drawing college students and longtime patrons with its affordable drinks.  MTSU Sidelines

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU launched its Green Bandana Project on April 6 near Walker Library to boost mental health awareness and build student peer support; students can join by completing a 90-minute QPR training and orientation at the Counseling Service Offices in KUC 329 — part of an initiative that began in 2014.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Jeanice McCord (a Tennessee native and community advocate) is running for Rutherford County Schools Board, Zone 1. She plans to improve classroom limits, support teacher retention, and boost school safety and mental health resources for students.  Murfreesboro Post
  • Samuel Haruna, an MTSU associate professor of soil science, received the prestigious 2026 John Pleas Faculty Award today for his excellence in teaching, research, and service — a recognition that included remarks from past honorees and support from local farmers.  Murfreesboro.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Between 2020 and 2025, suburban counties around Nashville saw large population increases according to Census estimates + Rutherford County gained nearly 45,000 residents while Davidson, Montgomery, Wilson and Williamson Counties recorded gains of tens of thousands, driving overall growth to nearly 6%.  The Daily News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • MTSU professor Chandra Story is encouraging neighbors to join the Rutherford County Heart Walk at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at Murfreesboro Medical Clinic (Garrison Drive). The rain-or-shine event offers 1- and 2-mile loops, CPR demos, blood pressure checks and a kids' corner to boost lifesaving skills.  WGNS
  • At MTSU, the Center for Equine Recovery for Veterans partners students with veterans in a 10-week program that uses horse interactions to build trust and improve emotional healing + the SERVE Showcase on Apr. 11 will let the community see its progress.  Murfreesboro.com
