CRIME NEWS
- ➤ MPD detectives are asking the public for help identifying two women accused of stealing several bottles of tequila from Big Pigs Wine and Spirits on Franklin Road on March 28 — witnesses reported the suspects left in a small black Nissan with a third unidentified driver. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Murfreesboro Fire Rescue reported in March that its first responders handled 2,035 calls — including structure fires, EMS emergencies, water rescues and drug overdoses. Chief McCluskey said the department completed a ten-day HazMat Technician course — raising its hazardous materials response skills to 101 trained technicians. WGNS
- ➤ Today at 11:30 a.m., the Murfreesboro City Council met in the Community Room at the Municipal Airport Business Center at 1930 Memorial Blvd. to discuss a proposal to update the sign ordinance to allow Electronic Message Centers*EMCs* for improved public safety and business messaging while also reviewing changes to alcohol rules, fire rescue upgrades, and other municipal issues with a public comment period that requires a six‑hour advance sign‑up. - ➤ TDOT announced that Murfreesboro and Smyrna commuters will get new interstate interchange projects in the next six years. In Murfreesboro, $61.5M will fund Old Fort Parkway widening with work set to start in 2031 and $39.5M will pay for an I-840 interchange beginning in 2026—Smyrna will receive a $22M project to improve the I-24 interchange at Almaville Road starting in 2029. - ➤ The Rutherford County Commission approved a new $15 million forensic center on a 10-acre site near Weakley Lane to provide quicker results for families. The center will offer training for forensic and medical students and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2027. NewsChannel 5
- ➤ Officer John Elliott showed quick action when he removed a loaded handgun and recovered a knife from an inmate during booking last October 2023 at Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. He will receive the 2025 Valor Award at the AJA’s 44th Conference & Jail Expo on May 20 in Fort Worth, Texas — a recognition for his exemplary bravery. Murfreesboro.com
- ➤ Starting May 7, Tennesseans will need a REAL ID or another approved photo ID to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities, military bases or nuclear power plants. Residents who plan to travel should update their driver's license to one with a star for about $28—by checking acceptable documents at local offices—before the deadline. The Daily News Journal
