COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of South Central Tennessee started its Volunteer Days initiative on April 25 with a community breakfast at the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce—bringing together volunteers, nonprofit partners and local leaders. Around 100 volunteers will work on projects in seven counties to support local nonprofits with tasks like landscaping and event help.  WGNS
  • Army veteran William Thomas, a Brentwood native, had a homecoming ceremony on April 19 to announce that Homes For Our Troops will build him, his wife, two children and service dog a new home on Bradyville Pike—about seven miles from downtown Murfreesboro. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police are investigating a fatal crash on S. Church Street — a collision with a Ford Taurus — that killed a motorcyclist on April 24 as investigators check if speed was a factor.  City of Murfreesboro
  • On April 24th, a resident discovered flames in the kitchen at a townhome on South Bilbro Avenue, and MFRD firefighters responded quickly to contain the fire—no injuries were reported even though smoke damage spread to other parts of the home while the Fire Marshal’s Office investigates the cause.  WGNS
  • A motorcyclist died after a serious crash on South Church Street—close to South Rutherford Boulevard on Thursday—as emergency crews responded quickly and police began investigating the accident.  Rutherford County Source

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 24th, La Vergne Police stopped a driver on Murfreesboro Road for failing to maintain his lane — he used a false name, admitted to carrying narcotics, and a search revealed 18 grams of heroin and 10 grams of meth while he faces outstanding warrants and multiple felony charges.  Rutherford County Source

  • Blackman seventh grader McKenzie Grove earned All-American honors at the Twin River Girls Nationals AAU tournament in Des Moines, Iowa after winning the TMSAAA state individual championship this season. She defeated wrestlers from Iowa, North Dakota and Missouri—helping represent the TN AAU Chaos K-8 girls team.  Murfreesboro Post
  • The Tennessee Titans selected Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft—he led Division I in passing touchdowns and was a Heisman Trophy finalist. The team has seven draft picks remaining as it prepares to add more talent in later rounds.  The Daily News Journal
