COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Murfreesboro Saturday Market will return May 3 for its 15th season around the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse and will run Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon through October. The season will feature 85 vendors (a record number) and new programs like the Market Passport Program (which offers prizes) to support local agriculture and community engagement.  WGNS
  • The Rutherford County Farmers Market celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking over 50 years of support for local agriculture since it began in 1975 at Cannonsburg Village and moved to Lane Agri-Park in 2009. The market will operate every Tuesday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May 9th to October 30th — drawing 45,000 local shoppers annually.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Glencliff United Methodist Church and Kaleo Nashville Church will host a Safe Surrender event tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m at 2901 Glencliff Road where residents can turn unwanted guns into gardening tools, art or jewelry. Participants may leave their firearms anonymously in their trunk for professional handling and in return receive a gift certificate between $100 and $200—an effort to help reduce accidental gun deaths in homes.  NewsChannel 5
  • This weekend, several events are planned around Rutherford County. The Murfreesboro Saturday Market runs every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse + the Friday Night Market happens on Fridays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 2248 State Hwy 99, while TN Apple Fest opens on May 3 at 10:00 a.m. in Hop Springs, Strawberry Jam Festival runs May 3 through 4 at Lucky Ladd Farms, and a Renaissance Festival is held in Arrington May 3 through 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Rutherford County Source

CRIME NEWS

  • The Tennessee Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help in solving a fatal hit-and-run in Rutherford County—where a pedestrian was struck at the intersection of Old Nashville Highway and Murray Lane in La Vergne between 1:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Thursday.  FOX 17
  • Detectives with the Murfreesboro Police investigated a suspicious death when a man was found deceased in a vehicle at E.A. Towing on Southpointe Court on May 1 at 2:30 p.m. by tow employees preparing a mechanic’s lien on an unclaimed car originally towed from Walmart on April 5 — an autopsy has been requested by the medical examiner — as the investigation remains active.  WGNS
  • A man accused of secretly recording a woman changing clothes at Plato's Closet on North Thompson Lane was identified from a photo taken on June 24th & police are still searching for him.  WGNS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Percy Bell—who refined his acting skills at MTSU in Murfreesboro and began his career in a small Louisiana town—doubles for Michael B. Jordan in Sinners, a film set in 1932 Clarksdale that is now in theaters nationwide. He aims to secure lead roles and is working on his own project, Where the Needle Skips, set to premiere later this year.  FOX 17
  • World Outreach Church invites the community to attend FAITH NEWS, a family musical with biblical songs and a heavenly news broadcast set inside the pearly gates. The free event will be held at Three Crosses Sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4th.  Murfreesboro.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three MTSU Geosciences Department students including Emily Therrell, Lula Baldriche and Trey Littrell presented NASA Space Grant-funded geospatial research at the Tennessee Geographic Information Council Conference held on April 16 in Murfreesboro. Their projects—a mix of campus flooding analysis, urban heat mapping, water quality assessment and light pollution tracking—will guide future work in STEM fields.  WGNS
