ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Police Department is investigating a crash that killed a bicyclist on Sunday at 10 p.m. when a blue Nissan Rogue struck the rider crossing near Carver Avenue — Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  FOX 17

  • Murfreesboro Police are investigating a deadly crash that occurred Sunday, May 4 when a blue Nissan Rogue traveling eastbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near Carver Avenue struck a bicyclist crossing the road.  NewsChannel 5

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle Tennessee State University honored its top student leaders with the 2024–25 True Blue Honors Bolt Awards on April 28 at the Student Union Ballroom, recognizing four Buchanan Fellows including Victoria Grigsby, Ariel Nicastro, Zachary Thomas, and Connor Prim + naming additional award winners such as Lynzie Gibson and Tiana Williams. On April 30, the new SGA leadership team was sworn in at the Keathley University Theater with R.J. Ware as president and an executive team that includes Kennedy Garrett, Hannah Ferreira, and others.  WGNS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Brood XIV cicadas emerged in Tennessee in late April when the soil warmed and have been reported in over 65 sightings — southern areas heard the buzz first while northern reports are growing. The insects will remain until late June and do not bite or sting, though their buzzing may be a nuisance.  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, TDOT announced that the state budget includes recurring $80 million in General Fund dollars — along with $1 billion in one-time funds — to boost projects and maintain roads and bridges across the region. The updated 10-year plan shows that projects like the I-24 Southeast Corridor between Nashville and Murfreesboro are on track to improve local travel.  Rutherford County Source
  • Tennessee has created a new Recurring Transportation Fund that provides $80 million a year for road, bridge, and safety improvements as part of TDOT’s updated 10-Year Plan—projects like adding express toll lanes on I-24 between Nashville and Murfreesboro are already underway. TDOT will also work on multiple corridors to ease congestion and maintain aging infrastructure without raising taxes.  FOX 17

  • In April the Middle Tennessee State University stock horse team won the National Intercollegiate Ranch and Stock Horse Association Division 2 title in Amarillo, Texas — they led by 117 points over 14 teams as their riders earned top individual honors.  Rutherford County Source
