  • Rutherford County Farmers Market celebrated its 50th anniversary on May 9 and continues to operate at the Lane Agri-Park through October. It is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. — vendors offer seasonal fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, baked and canned goods, as well as flowers, plants, shrubs and trees.  WGNS

CRIME NEWS

  • MTSU Actuarial Science professor Don Hong was indicted on May 5 for financial and identity fraud involving over $8,000 in misappropriated donations—he is held at Rutherford County Jail on a $500,000 bond.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Rutherford County deputies looked for armed car burglary suspects who broke into vehicles in a Blackman subdivision early May 9th and described one suspect in a Nike hoodie and another in ripped blue jeans driving a Hyundai Tucson with a Tennessee temporary license plate—officials said a third suspect later used a stolen credit card at Walmart, urging anyone with information to call Detective Grant Quintal at 615-904-3054.  Rutherford County Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Discovery School—a K-6 magnet school—has been redesignated as a STEM/STEAM school by the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, marking its second time to earn the honor. The school in Murfreesboro now joins nine other district schools committed to hands-on learning and academic innovation.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Six Rutherford County high school seniors earned scholarships from the Sheriff’s School Resource Officers Division, with recipients McClain from Blackman, Bassham from Eagleville, Olsen from Rockvale, Cumming from Central Magnet, LeLoup from Oakland and Ramsay from Riverdale—awards based on written essays, GPAs, ACT scores and recommendation letters funded by the annual SRO Golf Tournament—helping with their college plans.  Rutherford County Source
  • MTSU’s College of Media and Entertainment honored four alumni — Justin Hart, Don Carr, Jade Driver and Cassie Petrey — at its Wall of Fame and Student Scholarship Award Ceremony held in late April. The event celebrated their media achievements and awarded nearly 40 scholarships to support future professionals.  WGNS
  • Rutherford County Schools Director Dr. James Sullivan presented a $573 million operating budget for fiscal year 2025-26 during a special meeting on May 8, and the school board will review the details to address the district’s needs — further discussions are expected.  Murfreesboro Post

  • On May 9th, Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Chief Mark McCluskey told listeners on The WGNS Action Line that call volume dropped last month while his team faced more house fires—many caused by unattended cooking. He also warned that motorists should stay alert as more motorcycles returned to the roads.  WGNS
