CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 48-year-old man that happened early Saturday on Tampa Drive in Paragon Mills as 60-year-old James Green said he shot the man in self-defense when persistent knocking on an apartment door and a struggle with his girlfriend spurred his actions—no charges have been filed so far.  FOX 17
  • The Murfreesboro Police Department, led by Chief Michael Bowen, is using advanced technology such as the return of Zone 119, ICOR robots, tactical cameras, and a Real Time Crime Center to cut crime by improving response times and pinpointing gunfire within 90 feet — steps that have already led to faster arrests and lowered major crime rates.  WGNS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rutherford County officials announced the county is the fastest-growing in Tennessee with market values rising by $2.39 billion and nearly 30,000 nonfarm jobs added since April 2020. The growth increased annual property tax revenue by $7.94 million—showing strong local economic performance and a quality of life for residents.  FOX 17

  • MTSU celebrated its spring convocation weekend at Murphy Center as nearly 2,400 graduates received their diplomas in three ceremonies—speakers including Cameron Sexton, Rob Payne, and Tracey Rogers delivered messages that encouraged the new graduates to start their next journeys.  MTSU Sidelines
  • The Discovery Center will host its 33rd Annual Secret Garden Party on Friday, June 6 at the home of Amanda and Sen. Shane Reeves at 1471 Avellino Circle, and community members can join Secret Garden tours on Saturday and Sunday (June 7 and 8) to support the center's youth programs. This event celebrates over 30 years of the center inspiring local youth.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office promoted Training Deputy Kyle Grisham to sergeant to lead key training and crisis response programs — his new role covers the Virtual Reality De-escalation Site-Based Initiative grant and builds on his work as a Master Instructor for firearms and SWAT training. Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh officially appointed Grisham to the position to enhance officer preparedness.  WGNS
  • Today, May 11, the Murfreesboro Transportation Department shared a new computer model by Deputy Director Ram Balachandran that shows how traffic will be affected by various construction projects through May 17 — projects include road widenings, pavement repairs, and utility work on key corridors with lane closures and proper traffic controls in place.  WGNS

  • Gordon Ferguson, the May Heart for Healing honoree and longtime president and CEO of Ascension Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, will be the special guest on WGNS Action Line on May 13 at 8:15 a.m.—he will retire at the end of June after a 26-year career and then serve as vice president of Community Relations for one year.  WGNS

  • Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward, the first overall pick in this year's draft, attended rookie minicamp on May 10 at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park. He focused on learning the Titans' system and building good relationships with teammates and coaches—his work and leadership are seen as key to earning a starting role.  The Daily News Journal
