COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Olympic legend Michael Phelps will be the featured guest at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Rutherford County’s annual Stake and Burger dinner on June 9 at the MTSU Student Union Building, where local sponsors SRM Concrete + Nissan support programs for local youth.  WGNS
  • Local golfers will tee off on June 4 at Pine Creek Golf Course for the Fairway to Hope Golf Tournament — a fundraiser for Doors of Hope that funds housing and life-skills programs for local women. Registration for foursomes and sponsorships remains open.  WGNS

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 34th Annual Secret Garden Tour, presented by The Discovery Center, will open private gardens for residents to explore on June 6 and 7 in Murfreesboro. Master Gardeners will be available to answer visitors’ questions — offering expert insights for this unique community event.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU senior Elizabeth Lawrence won a Fulbright–University of Jyväskylä award and will travel to Finland in June to pursue a two-year master’s in music and science after her May graduation in Murfreesboro.  Murfreesboro.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Correctional Work Center has become one of Tennessee's top performers in the Employment and Reentry Pilot Program — which began in January with over 30 county jails participating — and 60.1% of 439 inmates completed 80 hours of training to earn certificates for future jobs.  WGNS
  • A new traffic signal at John Bragg Highway & Lyons Farm Parkway in Murfreesboro will become fully operational at 10 a.m. Monday, May 18 after a week in flashing mode, as city engineers switch it to normal operation. SPORTS NEWS

  • Former MTSU coach Rick Insell will receive Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame’s 2026 Pat Summitt Lifetime Achievement Award in July at Omni Nashville Hotel — and the Fred Russell Lifetime Achievement Award on June 9 at Music City Center. He retired after a 49-year coaching career with over 500 wins.  The Daily News Journal
  • The TSSAA Division II baseball state tournament starts May 19 in Murfreesboro, featuring three-game quarterfinal series that began May 13 — teams like Columbia Academy at St. George’s and ECS at Lakeway Christian will compete for semifinal spots.  The Daily News Journal
  • Siegel’s baseball team lost 5 to 2 against Nolensville in game one of the Class 4A sectional on May 13 (the win highlighted Nolensville’s strong pitching), and Siegel will regroup ahead of its next matchup.  The Daily News Journal
  • Riverdale’s softball team won a close 2-1 pitchers’ duel over Stewarts Creek Wednesday night to secure the region title for the first time since 2023. Stewarts Creek and Summit will travel next for their sectional games.  Murfreesboro Post
