COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stones River National Battlefield and Cemetery will hold commemorative events from May 23-26 to honor military service members. Youth groups will place flags on headstones on May 23 at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial ceremony on May 24 and guided walks on May 25 at the visitor center.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Yesterday, May 14, the Salvation Army hosted its annual Beyond the Bells luncheon at The View at Fountains, where community stories of hope were shared — and local partner SRM was honored for its 24‑state volunteer service.  WGNS
  • Stones River National Battlefield invites Rutherford County residents to honor fallen heroes with flag-placing on Saturday, May 23 by scouts and youth groups, a Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 24, and guided history walks on Monday, May 25.   • MTSU senior Lila Gordon gained international recognition for her digital illustration 'A Little Fishy' after being chosen from over 4,550 entries in the 2026 Student Scholarship Competition hosted by the Society of Illustrators. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Murfreesboro’s fire department (third busiest after Memphis and Nashville) handled over 2,000 calls in April, mostly for medical emergencies. City leaders have raised firefighter salaries to retain staff amid growing demand.  FOX 17
  • The new traffic signal at John Bragg Hwy and Lyons Farm Pkwy has flashed since May 11 and will operate fully on Monday, May 18 at 10 a.m.; developer Lennar Homes covered its cost as part of the Farmhouse Downs Subdivision project.  Rutherford County Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • MTSU hosted an event on campus on April 23 that collected over 80 pounds of medications & 136 vape products from the public. The initiative provided a safe way to dispose of expired drugs, including controlled substances and prescriptions, as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  Murfreesboro.com

  • Rutherford Source reports a roundup of local food and drink news from May 7–14 – highlights include a new Gumbo Bros Cajun restaurant opening at a Publix on Veterans Parkway and upcoming guided tours at Short Mountain Distillery in Woodbury.  Rutherford County Source

  • On Wednesday evening at Liberty Creek, the Wolves beat Springfield three to one in a tense seven inning softball championship as Caylei Jones hit a two run home run (setting up their state tournament matchup).  Murfreesboro Post
  • Merrol Hyde tennis captured its first TSSAA Class A girls championship and repeated as boys champions on Wednesday at The Champions Club Tennis Complex in Chattanooga. Key wins by Hadley Jones and the Foster sisters propelled the girls while the boys team swept its matches.  Murfreesboro Post
  • High school lacrosse championships begin today at Centennial High School + Ravenwood High School with Division I games scheduled from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. while Division II contests will take place Saturday, May 16.  The Daily News Journal
