COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity will host its 17th Annual Hammer Down for Habitat Poker Run on Saturday, September 20 as a 100-mile ride through scenic Tennessee to raise funds for affordable homes in Legacy Pointe in Murfreesboro — registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at 850 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and the ride starts at 8:30 a.m. Participants will finish at Hop Springs Brewery with poker prizes, lunch and festival access.  WGNS

CRIME NEWS

  • Officers said a man was found dead with gunshot wounds in his vehicle near the Waldron Road exit on Interstate 24 in La Vergne on May 19 just before 4 p.m.  Rutherford County Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City construction projects are affecting traffic at multiple Murfreesboro locations through May 24—work includes ramp improvements on Joe B Jackson Pkwy, roadway widening at the Manson Pike/Burnt Knob Rd and Blackman Rd intersection, utility work on N Rutherford Blvd, underground electric work near E Castle St, shoulder improvements on New Salem Hwy, and extensive resurfacing by TDOT and other contractors that will cause lane closures and shifts throughout the week.  Rutherford County Source
  • Rutherford County’s historic Cemetery School, which served Black children before desegregation, received a $250K grant from the state on May 16 for restoration as a community center and museum (Vincent Windrow is leading the project as executor of the Washington estate). State Rep. Mike Sparks and State Sen. Shane Reeves worked together to secure the funding.  The Daily News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Tennessee Red Cross — partnering with the Country Music Association — is accepting blood donations from now until Thursday, and donors will be automatically entered to win two four-night CMA Fest passes and two four-day Fan Fair X passes at Nissan Stadium from June 5-8. The effort comes as the Red Cross faces a critical shortage of donations.  NewsChannel 5
  • Whooping cough cases have been rising in Tennessee, with 235 cases reported as of April 28 and experts warning that the disease is dangerous for babies and young children. The increase comes as mask-wearing and social distancing faded—resulting in more than 10,000 cases nationwide this year.  The Daily News Journal

  • TSSAA Spring Fling 2025 opens today in Murfreesboro with state tournaments in baseball, softball, soccer, tennis and track and field—events will continue through May 23. Fans can watch live on NFHS Network and buy daily tickets for $13.60 plus a $5 parking fee.  The Daily News Journal
  • Tickets for TSSAA Spring Fling are on sale for high school state championships in baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, and track and field, with prices at $12 plus $1.60 tax per day. The championships run May 20-23 at various venues in Murfreesboro and Middle Tennessee—tickets let fans visit all sites with one stamped admission.  The Daily News Journal
