COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Break-Thru TN will host a free panel discussion on mental health at Fountains at Gateway on Monday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. The event, moderated by Pamela Furr & featuring experts like Greg Pihs, Dr. Bryan Terry, Matt Smith, and Amy Green, will address care challenges in underserved areas.  WGNS
  • The Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department held its first Citizens CPR class on May 31 where residents learned hands-only CPR, AED use, and choking relief techniques — the department will offer the class annually to boost local emergency response. Participants practiced on mannequins and AED devices under the guidance of experienced instructors.  Rutherford County Source
  • Movies Under the Stars, a free outdoor film series hosted by Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation, runs from June 2 until July 26 at various parks. Films are shown at Barfield Crescent Park on Mondays, Richard Siegel Park on Thursdays, Cannonsburgh Village on Fridays, and Fountains at Gateway on Saturdays—giving families a chance to enjoy summer nights outdoors.  WGNS

  • Murfreesboro Police and the TBI—on Saturday, June 7, issued a Silver Alert for 59-year-old Charlotte Lester, who was last seen riding a graphite gray bike and wearing navy blue clothing as authorities worry her medical condition may keep her from safely returning home.  FOX 17

CULTURE NEWS

  • Murfreesboro hosts the International Folkfest, where folk music and dance groups from Estonia, Puerto Rico, and Poland will perform at venues across the region from June 10—June 14. Hosted by the Cripple Creek Cloggers, the week-long event features free public shows and a community finale that promotes peace through song.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rutherford County Assessor Rob Mitchell rejected County Mayor Joe Carr's call for his resignation, saying Carr overstepped his bounds and misunderstood the office’s independent, constitutional role. Mitchell stated that legal channels — not public opinion — should resolve the dispute, and he remains committed to serving taxpayers.  FOX 17
  • County Commissioner Pettus Read will join WGNS Action Line on Friday morning to discuss findings that the obelisk on Old Lascassas Pike—long believed to mark Tennessee’s geographic center—may be 300 yards off its historic spot. A listener sent a photo showing a leaning top while police confirmed the marker is stable and officials raised concerns about upkeep on leased land that could soon be sold.  WGNS
