  • Residents in Murfreesboro have a busy weekend with five events scheduled—today the Courthouse Square hosts Friday Night Live at 6:30 p.m. and Cedar Glade Brews welcomes the International Folk Fest at 5 p.m., while on June 14 Sloan’s Motorcycle & ATV hosts the Annual Bikes & Barbeque from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Courthouse Square hosts a sidewalk chalk art contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Arrington Vineyards will host a crawfish boil from noon to 3 p.m.  Rutherford County Source
  • Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation and Middle Tennessee Electric will host Celebration Under the Stars on July 4th at the Fountains at Gateway, featuring DJ music, dancing and food trucks from 4:30 to 7:30 pm — a live set by Derrick Dove and The Peacekeepers at 7:30 pm followed by a fireworks display at 9 pm.  Rutherford County Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Fire Rescue crews are responding to a gas leak at Murfreesboro Flower Shop at 1007 Memorial Blvd — Poplar Ave. at Wedgewood is closed, several nearby businesses are evacuated, and police are directing traffic while Atmos Energy works to repair the leak.  WGNS

CRIME NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Police, with help from Lebanon Police, dismantled a retail theft ring that used a device to bypass security and steal clothing at local stores on multiple dates and arrested four suspects on felony theft charges (a warrant was issued for a fifth suspect).  City of Murfreesboro

CULTURE NEWS

  • Final days of International Folkfest bring free cultural performances from international acts and local groups, with events spanning from Thursday to Saturday. Today, festival-goers can visit Patterson Park Community Center at 12:30 p.m. to watch the Estonia Troupe—other free shows are scheduled at Cedar Glade Brews and a grand finale in Smyrna.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists are advised that Blackman Road south of Manson Pike will be closed for about three weeks starting June 18 while contractors upgrade the intersection—drivers must detour via Vaughn Road to Veterans Pkwy and Burnt Knob Rd. A new elementary school near Blackman Road is under construction and is set to open by August as part of a two-school complex.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Murfreesboro city leaders said a new fire station will be needed in the Joe B. Jackson Parkway corridor to keep emergency response times short as the area grows. Vice Mayor Bill Shacklett said the city is negotiating a land swap for a three-acre lot adjacent to its current parcel — a move that supports more public-safety infrastructure.  WGNS
  • On May 9, Tennessee Highway Patrol working with ICE detained and later deported Hilario Martinez-Garcia at a sobriety checkpoint near Springfield while he was returning to his home in Ashland City, leaving his wife Chelsea White and their children without their main supporter—an act she said targeted his skin color.  NewsChannel 5

  • Blackman High School won the DNJ All-Sports trophy for the second time—scoring 131–127 to beat Stewarts Creek. This win, their first since 2017, came after strong spring sports in track, flag football, baseball and softball.  The Daily News Journal
