- ➤ Murfreesboro families are invited to attend the Gear Up and Go event today from 10 a.m. to noon at World Outreach, where Redstone Federal Credit Union funds a free backpack giveaway and offers financial tips. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office will conduct car seat checks and the Tennessee Highway Safety Office will use a Seat Belt Convincer—adding safety support as local partners offer free car seat cleaning and collect food donations for the ATLAS program. - ➤ Early Friday morning around 5:00 a.m., an attempted ATM robbery turned deadly when thieves broke a window at the Murfreesboro 7-Eleven-Exxon on E. Northfield Blvd. & police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting. WGNS
- ➤ The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals upheld a 99-year sentence for Oscar Hernandez for child rape and sexual battery — the court ruled that the evidence of ongoing harm and abuse of trust justified combining multiple penalties. WGNS

- ➤ Murfreesboro Water Resources Department has launched a contest called Water Visionaries: Imagining A Day Without Water for high school students in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County to share ideas on what life would be like without water. Winners will be invited to Water Visionaries Day at the Tennessee State Capitol — where they will learn about environmental legislation and receive cash prizes ranging from $100 to $500. WGNS
- ➤ On July 31, the Murfreesboro City Council voted to reject a settlement with BFI Waste Systems and Republic Services over environmental issues at the Middle Point Landfill — the City said it will seek legal action to protect residents by holding the companies accountable for air and water quality. - ➤ The Murfreesboro City Council rejected a settlement with BFI Waste Systems and Republic Services at its July 31 meeting because it did not secure stronger air and water protections — the deal only covered environmental impacts and did not address the companies’ expansion plans.
