EDUCATION NEWS

  • Middle Tennessee State University will host a free local history program from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Aug. 20 in downtown Murfreesboro where participants will tour exhibits at the Rutherford County Courthouse plus explore the Heritage Center to learn about local preservation efforts.   • MTSU opened its 90000 square foot Applied Engineering Building on Aug. 6 with hundreds in attendance—this three-story facility now houses the Mechatronics Engineering program and labs to train students for careers in robotics and automation.  Murfreesboro Post

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office earned two top awards at the Tennessee Highway Safety Office’s conference in Nashville from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8. Patrol Sgt. Austin Watson led the effort that made the agency the Law Enforcement Challenge Overall Winner — Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh praised his outstanding work in promoting highway safety.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Today, the Murfreesboro Transportation Department warns that extensive roadwork—spanning I-24 ramp improvements, intersection widening and Google Fiber installations—will cause lane closures and traffic delays until August 16. Drivers are urged to plan alternate routes as the projects aim to ease congestion in a rapidly growing city.  WGNS

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Murfreesboro Kiwanis Club has teamed up with Archie’s Promise to put free hygiene vending machines in local schools—machines that offer deodorant, toothpaste, and feminine products to help students feel clean and confident. The project supports student health and dignity while removing the stigma of asking for help—making essential care more accessible for those in need.  WGNS
  • MTSU and H.U.S.T.L.E. Recovery have secured nearly $8.7 million in grant money to start new recovery plans—such as safe housing for people waiting for treatment—in West, Middle and East Tennessee. The project will add services like counseling, job training and transportation support to help fill gaps in opioid care.  WGNS
