ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire on East Burton Street near Maney Avenue at 5:43 a.m. Tuesday; one person was injured and taken to the hospital as crews stayed on scene to check for hot spots—drivers were advised to use alternate routes while large fire trucks blocked the narrow street.  WGNS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wawa held a groundbreaking event at 5208 Veterans Pkwy in Murfreesboro on Tuesday, Aug. 12 where guests sampled food and drink while listening to remarks from President Brian Schaller and local officials. The event showed strong community support as preparations continued for the new store.  The Daily News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • The grave box of Captain William Lytle was destroyed at his historic family cemetery beside Haynes Brothers Lumber Company on Northwest Broad Street. Authorities are investigating the vandalism and local leaders plan to restore the site—where the Revolutionary War soldier donated the land for the city—as America prepares for its 250th celebration.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Princeton Review released its Best 391 Colleges list that names five Tennessee universities for 2026—Middle Tennessee State University, Rhodes College, Vanderbilt University, the University of the South and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The list is based on surveys of over 170,000 students and expert advice.  The Daily News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TDOT will widen Thompson Lane from Memorial Boulevard to Broad Street under a $150 million plan that adds sidewalks and a multi-use path; the bidding project includes three new bridges and increased utility relocation costs from $3.5 million to $20 million — a sign of the project's large scope — set to improve travel for local drivers.  Murfreesboro.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance, in partnership with Ascension Saint Thomas and United Surgical Partners International, will host an open house on Aug 14 at the new Westlawn Surgery Center in Murfreesboro to celebrate Rutherford County’s first dedicated orthopaedic ambulatory surgery center. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 5109 Veterans Parkway — facility tours, light refreshments, and opportunities to meet physicians and staff will be available.  WGNS
