CRIME NEWS

  • Murfreesboro police arrested 44-year-old Heather Keller after she allegedly struck a 55-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run at the Kroger parking lot on South Church Street on Sunday, August 24—she now faces several charges and the victim is in critical condition at a Nashville hospital.  WGNS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • After no one claimed the $777 million jackpot on August 25, the Powerball prize has risen to an estimated $815 million with three Tennessee tickets winning prizes—a $2 million win in Memphis and two $50,000 wins—and the next drawing will occur today at 10:59 p.m.  The Daily News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Rutherford County Schools will soon use weapon scanners to screen all students and guests at school entrances. Each person will pass through individually, and everyday items like cell phones and keys will not trigger alerts—students whose scans are triggered will receive further screening by staff.  Rutherford County Source
  • MTSU hosted the grand opening of Demos’ restaurant on Monday morning as the longtime local favorite opened in the Student Union.   • Murfreesboro’s CityTV earned five Government Programming Awards at the 40th annual NATOA ceremony in New Orleans—also receiving a bronze Telly Award for Marcus Delaney’s video on Bradley Academy Museum.  City of Murfreesboro
  • Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh denied a new ICE contract at Monday’s Rutherford County Public Safety Committee meeting—where locals holding signs like No ICE and ICE Out of Tennessee voiced their concerns—while Deputy Chief Steve Spence and other officials listened. Local community members gave public comments to underline their unease over any potential changes in ICE policy.  The Daily News Journal
  • Residents protested at the Rutherford County Courthouse in downtown Murfreesboro on Aug 25 to speak out against Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh’s reported ICE partnership. Fitzhugh said his deputies will not enforce immigration law — his office has only notified ICE about foreign-born arrested suspects since 1996.  The Daily News Journal
