A partial lunar eclipse produced an almost blood moon for local skywatchers as Earth's shadow darkened part of the moon.
The event began Aug. 27 (8:23 p.m. CT) and reached maximum today (11:12 a.m. CT), giving the sky a brief, rusty glow.
This weekend, five events enliven the region.
Families can join a campfire and night hike in Smyrna on Saturday, a superhero-themed 5K at Sharp Springs Park, splash days at Lucky Ladd Farms, plus a three-day horse sports show in Murfreesboro and a free concert at Centennial Park today (5–9 p.m.).
Today on WGNS, host Scott Walker welcomed Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation officials including Director Nate Williams to discuss a new splash pad and rising popularity of pickleball.
The panel previewed upcoming facility plans for Patterson Park Community Center.

Buc-ee's CEO Arch Aplin III said the company is expanding in business-friendly, conservative states, and new Murfreesboro and Gallaway locations are planned.
The Murfreesboro travel center near Interstate 24 & Joe B. Jackson Parkway is expected to open in December.
Spirit Halloween is now open with two store locations in Murfreesboro.
One is at 1960 Old Fort Parkway near Outback Steakhouse & Walmart and the other is inside The Avenue Murfreesboro across from pOpshelf, where shoppers can find Halloween costumes, decorations and accessories.

Flags across Tennessee are at half-staff to honor Dolly Parton, who died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on Aug.
25 after a brief battle with cancer; the order, issued by the governor, keeps them lowered until 6 p.m. Sept. 1.
🎓 Education
Pickleball players can register now for the City Schools Foundation’s 3rd Annual Serve It Up Doubles Pickleball Tournament, with casual play starting Friday, Oct.
23 at 6 p.m. and competitive doubles on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 9 a.m. at Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro — funds benefit local schools.
School resource officers in Murfreesboro hosted a back-to-school shopping event at Kohl’s where 13 high school students used $250 each to buy clothes and shoes.
Community shoppers donated funds and can contact SRO Sam Trubee (615-203-2119) to sponsor future events.
Rutherford County Schools earned the NAMM Best Communities for Music Education Award for the eighth consecutive year.
The award reflects strong funding, instructional time, and community backing, ensuring music is taught at every grade level and new schools include music rooms (vital for nurturing local talent).
School Resource Officers in Rutherford County note that smartphones have fueled conflicts that continue online long after classes end.
Local officials (including SRO Sgt. Scott Culp) are updating policies to address digital disputes in local schools.

Social Security payments will be sent in September with SSI checks arriving on Sept.
1 and Social Security payments scheduled for Sept. 9, 16, and 23 based on birth dates while Tennessee recipients are advised to wait three extra days before calling if payments are delayed.
🏥 Health
Baxter International Inc. recalled multiple injectable drugs that may contain fiberglass or stainless steel contaminants; the recalled Dextrose and Sodium Chloride Injections were sold to healthcare providers in Tennessee and other states in late July.
Customers are advised to check supplies and follow return protocols — if encountered.
