EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU’s Recording Industry Department partnered with Conference USA to let songwriting students create original songs for the league's brand campaign — the top track made its debut on national TV during the first football game.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Rutherford County Schools earned top Level 5 status on August 28 for 2024-25 academic growth—with 32 campuses showing growth far above expectations—thanks to teacher and principal focus on students, according to Director Jimmy Sullivan. Board Chairman Claire Maxwell celebrated the district’s return to pre-pandemic performance and strong leadership, marking its sixth consecutive achievement.  The Daily News Journal
  • Rutherford County Schools is installing new weapons detection systems in all schools to boost safety amid national concerns; students at Rockvale High School lined up on Thursday and the systems will be active in every school by Tuesday — the new equipment is designed to screen for weapons and large metal objects and is funded with a $4 million state bonus.  NewsChannel 5

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City and state transportation leaders cut the ribbon for the new Murfreesboro Transit Center at 324 New Salem Hwy on August 28; the center will open to the public on Sept. 8 with new transit routes. The $17 million project—funded by TDOT, federal funds and local matching dollars—provides a passenger pavilion, bus maintenance facility and administrative offices to improve transit service.  WGNS
  • State agencies and a hunting group say it is a bad idea to rebuild the Columbia Dam on the Duck River in Maury County because it could remove public hunting lands and hurt wildlife habitat — officials plan to review water projects carefully through the Duck River Watershed Planning Partnership.   • Veterans in Rutherford County say a strong odor from the Middle Point Landfill is affecting their health and triggering war memories — concerns have reached the VA hospital. Murfreesboro officials and veterans noted that a federal lawsuit against Republic Services is moving to trial — prompting calls for effective odor eliminators.  FOX 17
