CRIME NEWS

  • Eric Buchanan—who had eight prior felony convictions—was sentenced to 120 years for attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault after he returned to a local bar on Halls Hill Pike armed with a handgun two years ago, and he will serve his sentence at the Northeast Correctional Complex with parole unavailable until 2085.  WGNS
  • Four men from Texas were extradited to Murfreesboro to face charges for an attempted ATM theft at a 7-Eleven on East Northfield Boulevard that turned deadly when a customer fatally shot suspect Tyrese Walder at about 5 a.m. on August 1+authorities confirmed the suspects remain in custody with upcoming bond hearings.  WGNS
  • Four Texas men have been extradited to Murfreesboro for their alleged roles in an attempted ATM theft at a 7-Eleven Exxon on East Northfield Boulevard on Aug. 1—each facing charges of theft and burglary with bond amounts ranging from $60,000 to $160,000—while a fifth suspect was fatally shot by a customer during the incident.  Rutherford County Source

  • Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh announced Sept 8 that he will retire and will not seek another term in 2026—he said serving the county has been the honor of his life. He led efforts to boost patrols and upgrade department systems to better serve the community.  The Daily News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Providence Christian Academy basketball star Chris Washington Jr.—the state's top recruit—has committed to Alabama after his MVP performance in the state championship win and will join Nate Oats' Crimson Tide next season. He is 6-foot-9 and was ranked 18th nationally in the 2026 class after earning offers from over 21 schools.  Murfreesboro Post
  • Middle Tennessee volleyball made its home debut by beating Marist 3-0 on Sept. 5 and defeated UT Martin while losing 0-3 to Mississippi State in the Blue Raider Bash held over the weekend. Coach Alexa Keckler said the team focused on blocking and service—senior setter Caroline Macander led with 29 assists to drive the balanced performance.  MTSU Sidelines
