  • Residents in Rutherford County have five local events this weekend—today’s Top Gun Night Run 6k in Smyrna kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with live music and charity support while Murfreesboro hosts both Downtown After 5 and a comedy night, and Saturday brings a macrame workshop at Wilderness Station and a pet festival on Upper Broadway in Nashville.  Rutherford County Source

  • Gallagher Guitars moved to a new retail space on Front Street in downtown Murfreesboro after owner David Mathis bought and relocated the historic business from Wartrace—he expects the company, which builds around 200 custom guitars a year, to be fully operational by the end of the month.  Murfreesboro Post

  • University president Sidney A. McPhee fired assistant dean Laura Sosh-Lightsy late Wednesday night after her controversial social media comments about activist Charlie Kirk drew calls for her termination—Blue Elite tour guides later received an email instructing them to refer any questions to the president's office.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Yesterday, the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center and MTSU held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the Miller Education Center to honor lives lost and those who served. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith M. Huber and keynote speaker Roy Sexton provided remarks—accompanied by the national anthem, a moment of silence and cadet reflections—that helped attendees remember the impact of the attacks.  MTSU Sidelines
  • At its Sept. 9 meeting in Murfreesboro, Middle Tennessee State University’s Board of Trustees reelected Stephen B. Smith as chair, appointed three new trustees—John Floyd, Jimmy Granbery, and Chad White—and endorsed proposals for new graduate degree programs. President Sidney A. McPhee reported that fall enrollment increased to 21,025 students, and the board approved plans to renovate a residence hall and consider financing for a new residential project scheduled for Fall 2027.  Rutherford County Source
  • Twenty-four educators from Rutherford County middle and high schools have been named as Rutherford Works Ambassadors to serve as liaisons for school and workforce programs—this program connects students with career and job-readiness initiatives provided by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce.  Rutherford County Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 11th, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security remembered the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks by sharing a statewide message from Commissioner Jeff Long—honoring nearly 3,000 lives lost and the first responders who served. The department continues to work with local and federal agencies to strengthen prevention, protection, and response efforts.  Rutherford County Source
  • Middle TN residents gathered on Sept. 11 at the Rutherford County Historical Courthouse in Murfreesboro to protest the Sheriff’s Department connection with ICE and support Commissioner Hope Oliver. A heavy law enforcement presence accompanied 175 attendees and multiple speakers who voiced their concerns—ensuring their opinions were heard.  The Daily News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health inspection scores from September 4—11 were released for schools, pools and food service facilities in Rutherford County. The scores include routine and follow-up inspections that show local compliance with health standards.  Rutherford County Source

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The first of three dove seasons opened Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 29 — shooting is not allowed until noon and hunters must have both a state hunting license and a Migratory Bird Permit unless they have a lifetime license. The rules set a 15-bird limit on mourning doves while no limit applies to Eurasian collared doves, making correct species identification important.  Murfreesboro Post

  • MTSU football (0-2) will try to earn its first win when the Blue Raiders travel to Nevada on Sept. 13 (4 p.m. CT) and aim to break a five-game losing streak after a 42-10 loss at Wisconsin in Week 2.  The Daily News Journal
  • Two Rutherford County volleyball players earned honors from the HBCUAC after their recent tournament plays. Kamaria Murray, a sophomore at Oakwood University, was named Attacker of the Week at the Talladega College Labor Day Tournament with 46 kills and 29 digs in three matches, while Nialah Gupton, a senior at Fisk University, reached 1,000 digs and was named Defender of the Week.  Murfreesboro Post
