  • Families in Murfreesboro will have the chance to see more than 20 vehicles—including trucks, a helicopter, a boat, and more—at the annual Touch-a-Truck event on Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. — noon at World Outreach Church on New Salem Highway, hosted by the Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force and coordinated by local police.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Rutherford County's job market stays resilient with unemployment rising slightly yet remaining below the national average as Workforce Development Month connects residents with career opportunities. Murfreesboro police ask for help identifying two women suspected of shoplifting at Ulta Beauty while Mayor Joe Carr announced his re-election run emphasizing balanced budgets, infrastructure improvements, and education investments—local officials are also searching for Carlos Bernard Davis and planning a Serve It Up Pickleball Tournament to support City Schools.  WGNS

  • Target will start its car seat trade‐in event on Sept. 21 through Oct. 4 at 31 stores in Tennessee so that customers who drop off old or damaged car seats get a 20% discount coupon for new car seats, strollers or select baby gear—this discount is valid until Oct. 18.  The Daily News Journal
  • The Costco area near I-24 is set for new business projects as Floor & Decor will open October 9 and Valvoline is expected to open November 17—Freddy’s Steakburgers construction will begin early next year while Perkins Motorplex and Living Spaces dealership projects are planned.  Murfreesboro.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Staff Sergeant Shawn Zheng, a Murfreesboro native and horn player with The President's Own United States Marine Band, will perform at a free concert in Smyrna on October 6 at 7:30 p.m. inside the Stewarts Creek High School Main Gymnasium—tickets are limited to four per request.  WGNS
  • During homecoming week, students competed in a Mac and Cheese Cook-off at the Student Union Commons on Sept. 17, where Greek groups showcased their best recipes under the hot sun—highlighting creative stands and school spirit. The cook-off winner will be announced today at Party in the Grove before the football game against Marshall University.  MTSU Sidelines

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 18, 2025, Murfreesboro City Council approved a $145,700 federal and state grant with 95 percent federal funding and a $63,589 work authorization for Barge Design Solutions to complete the siting study for a proposed air traffic control tower at Murfreesboro Municipal Airport—this study will help the FAA decide on the project.  Rutherford County Source
  • Murfreesboro Airport Director Chad Gerke said the airport is expanding with a brand-new 150x100-ft hangar that will include 3,000 sq-ft of office space as part of a 5-year plan with a new control tower and utility upgrades. The expansion will support MTSU's aviation program relocation and add jobs while featuring community events like Steamfest on October 18.  Murfreesboro.com
  • Republic is planning to expand its Middle Point Landfill in Rutherford County despite repeated environmental violations this year and strong local opposition, as both the city council and county commission voted against the expansion. Local officials also criticized Republic for misleading the public with deceptive mailers—raising concerns over air and water quality.  The Daily News Journal
