COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In Murfreesboro, the annual Touch-a-Truck event will take place Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at World Outreach Church on New Salem Highway—families can explore over 20 vehicles including a helicopter, boat, and fire engines. Sponsored by the Rutherford County Traffic Safety Task Force, the free event will also feature food vendors and opportunities to meet local first responders.  WGNS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Surcheros is opening its second location — at 2222 Medical Center Parkway, Suite A in Murfreesboro — on Monday, October 6 at 10:30 a.m. The restaurant offers free burritos for a year to the first 100 guests who scan their receipt in the Surcheros app.  Rutherford County Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Murfreesboro will host the 11th Annual Oktoberfest at Oaklands Mansion tomorrow from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.—the event will feature local craft brewers, food vendors, and live music; tickets must be purchased online by 3:00 p.m. and guests should bring lawn chairs as seating is limited.  WGNS
  • Today, the Friday Night Market runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at State Hwy 99 in Murfreesboro as Rutherford County hosts one of its final summer events. Other weekend events include Oktoberfest at Oaklands Mansion on Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m., a Fall Wreath Workshop at Valley Growers Garden Center at 4 p.m., Depot Days in Smyrna from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with planned road detours, and the Show Me Reptile Show in Murfreesboro from Saturday 9 a.m. to Sunday 3:30 p.m.—each offering family-friendly fun.  Rutherford County Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oakland High School offered a sneak peek tour of its new renovations on Sept 25, showing a BioStem classroom, culinary arts kitchen and modern auditorium—features that will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting on Sept 28 at 2 p.m. The updated spaces connect the main and annex buildings to improve learning environments.  The Daily News Journal
  • Grammy-nominated songwriter Sandy Knox, who wrote hits for Reba McEntire — and Dionne Warwick, will visit MTSU’s Lyrics Lounge on Sept 30 at 2:30 p.m. to discuss her new audiobook-musical Weighting: My Life If It Were a Musical and answer questions in a Q&A moderated by Beverly Keel.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Rutherford County Schools confirmed that Stewarts Creek Elementary remains overcrowded despite rezoning measures intended to shift students to other K-5 campuses with available space — the move has not alleviated the ongoing crowding issue.  The Daily News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rutherford County released health inspection scores for food service, tattoo studios, pools, and other establishments inspected from September 18 to 25. The county health department inspected these sites at least twice a year (as required by law) and posted the results for public review.  Rutherford County Source
  • El Hornito Bakery 2 in Murfreesboro received a low health inspection score of 76 on September 24 due to poor employee hygiene, blocked handwashing sinks, and improper food storage—The inspection noted 8 violations and a Risk 3 classification that raised food safety concerns.  Rutherford County Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Youth Basketball League in Murfreesboro begins registration on October 1 for children aged 5 to 17. City residents will pay $100 + non-residents $115 while teams practice weekly in December and start games in January.  City of Murfreesboro
  • MTSU football will play its first Conference USA game today against Kennesaw State at 5 p.m. on ESPN+ as the Owls, 1-3, face a 2-2 opponent led by head coach Jerry Mack—whose winning background may help set the tone for the season.  MTSU Sidelines
