ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Fire Rescue crews responded to a ruptured gas line on West College Street as Atmos Energy works to stop the leak—West College Street is closed between NW Broad Street and Medical Center Boulevard while drivers are advised to use alternate routes.  Rutherford County Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Floor & Decor is celebrating the opening of its new Murfreesboro location at 1230 Beasie Road on Saturday, October 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests will enjoy prize giveaways every 15 minutes, family-friendly games, free lunch from food trucks, and treats from local businesses like Julia’s Homestyle Bakery, Classy Cactus Farm, and Brass Horn Coffee Roasters.  Rutherford County Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • In September, RAA awarded its first K12 scholarships to ten students from three Rutherford County schools after securing a $22300 grant from The Christy-Houston Foundation for future awards. It also launched The Art of Unburdening to help dementia caregivers through creative expression and is funded by an Arts Build Communities grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MTSU’s Baldwin Photographic Archive in Murfreesboro received a donation of 20 photographic prints by retired educator Andrew Davidhazy, a photographer who built his own equipment to experiment with unique styles. The prints — which challenge traditional photography — are available by appointment in the Miller Education Center.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Revenue will host a free webinar for new business owners on October 8 at 8:30 a.m. Central — the online session will cover state tax registration, sales, and business tax along with other related topics. This webinar is part of a quarterly series aimed at guiding new businesses.  Rutherford County Source
  • The Murfreesboro City Council approved the Keystone Project—designed to convert a mostly empty downtown into a mix of homes, shops, and dining—in a 4-2 vote Thursday night. The plan will be developed in three parts: 239 multifamily units, 100 condominiums with retail space, and a 115-room hotel with retail, while WGNS radio must move before any demolition begins.  WGNS
  • A Tennessee mother named Kim Webb is fighting for tougher hit and run laws after her 19 year old son died when a driver fled his motorcycle crash on Rocky Fork Almaville Road and Morton Lane in September 2021. The driver got a light sentence and early release, so Webb is backing the James Bardsley Life Protection Act — a bill to set mandatory penalties for drivers who leave the scene of fatal crashes.  NewsChannel 5

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between September 25 and October 2, Rutherford County had its lowest food health scores for several Murfreesboro spots including Aloha Hawaiin Express, Silo’s Bar & Grill, Demos Steak Spaghetti House and Krazee Dog Mobile Food Est—scores that came from routine Department of Health inspections. Food establishments must display their most recent inspection reports for public review.  Rutherford County Source
  • Ascension Saint Thomas said that if Congress does not extend health care subsidies by Dec. 31, more than 500,000 Tennesseans will lose their tax credits—hospitals will face additional costs from increased charity care as more patients go uninsured.  FOX 17

  • Blackman’s football team beat Stewarts Creek 35-7 before fall break—rallying after a previous loss to Oakland. Jaevion Elliott threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and ran an 87-yard touchdown in the final quarter to secure the win.  Murfreesboro Post
  • Oakland used a fast start — with Ja’Vonni Malone returning a kickoff for 94 yards and Justis Haggard scoring three times — to beat Rockvale 35 to 14 in a homecoming game on Thursday night.  Murfreesboro Post
