COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department has opened registration for the 2025 Christmas Parade with the A Sweet Christmas theme—the parade will roll out at 2:00 p.m. on December 14 and travel down E. Main starting near Middle Tennessee Blvd in front of MTSU and ending at Walnut Street.  WGNS
  • Murfreesboro Indivisible will hold the second No Kings Day of Action on Oct. 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 on the public sidewalk between Mimi’s Café and Chili’s at The Avenue on Medical Center Parkway — the group plans a peaceful protest with safety measures and police cooperation.  WGNS
  • Today, downtown Murfreesboro shows modern two- to four-story buildings rising next to classic one-story homes, sparking debate about preserving the city’s history—historian Greg Tucker calls for tax abatements and a written inventory of significant properties to guide future planning. The discussion highlights the challenge of balancing growth with the preservation of local character.  WGNS

  • Opah Greek Grill reopened its renovated space on James Luscinski Drive near Walmart, adding new remote-controlled tech to improve lighting and fan settings for a better dining experience. Isaac, who has served Murfreesboro with affordable Mediterranean dishes for 17 years—blending flavors from Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, and Greece—is excited to welcome customers and continue his journey of flavor and family.  WGNS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ethel Cain will perform at FirstBank Amphitheater on May 1, 2026 as part of her Willoughby Tucker Forever tour, which also includes stops in Tallahassee and other cities across the Midwest and Southeast. The tour uses Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange so fans can resell tickets at face value — one dollar from each sale will support groups serving the trans community.  Rutherford County Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MTSU’s School of Agriculture helped host a fall conference on October 10 in the Student Union where students, gardeners and community members learned that varroa mites, habitat loss and pesticide exposure harm honey bees. Speakers urged beekeepers to use monitoring and mitigation practices to protect the bees — essential pollinators for our food supply.  MTSU Sidelines

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former MTSU standout Cheyenne Parker-Tyus led the Las Vegas Aces to a four-game sweep by beating the Phoenix Mercury 97-86—making her only the second Blue Raider to win a WNBA Finals title.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Middle Tennessee lost a football game to Missouri State at Floyd Stadium on Oct 8th—dropping to a 1–5 record as head coach Derek Mason took responsibility for the team's missed scoring chances. The Blue Raiders will work to improve fourth-down conversions and overall offense as they prepare for upcoming games against Delaware and Jacksonville State.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Tennessee football forced four fumbles and recorded five sacks in a 34-31 win against Arkansas on Oct. 11 but allowed nearly 500 yards overall. Players said the defense did not meet their standards — they hope to improve in the upcoming game against Alabama on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC — as questions persist about the team’s performance.  The Daily News Journal
  • Ensworth won 28-21 at CPA as EJ Gibson rushed for three touchdowns and 178 yards and Bishop Starling, who tumbled while running, caught seven passes for 48 yards and scored the first touchdown—helping the Tigers build a 21-0 lead before CPA scored.  Murfreesboro Post
