COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Grand Book Exchange opened in Murfreesboro to offer a cozy space for readers and host community events; owner Lindsey Romine held a Boro Book Club kickoff on Oct. 16th—she has scheduled future meetings on Oct. 30th, Nov. 6th, and Nov. 20th.  MTSU Sidelines
  • Rutherford County offers five events this weekend. Today, Oaklands Mansion hosts a Halloween speakeasy with live music and specialty cocktails — on October 18, Stones River National Battlefield stages an Arts in the Park celebration, The Avenue holds Fall Kids Fest, Liberty’s Station presents KST’s benefit concert, and Martin’s Home & Garden hosts its Fall Festival — giving residents a variety of local activities.  Rutherford County Source
  • On Halloween, October 31, a Trunk or Treat Farmers Market for kids will take place at Lane Agri Park, 315 John R Rice Blvd from 8 AM to 12 Noon—later that day children will fill their Halloween bags with treats while trick or treating on the historic downtown square from 3 to 5 p.m.  WGNS

CRIME NEWS

  • After a fight broke out on Oct. 16 at the National Pan-Hellenic Council Courtyard Wednesday in the Student Union Commons, NPHC canceled their events for the rest of fall 2025 while MTSU Police investigate the incident—two women started the altercation that involved additional students.  MTSU Sidelines

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local ceramic artist Lewis Snyder, whose work in art and teaching spans more than 50 years, was honored on Oct. 13 as one of 11 winners of the Tennessee Governor’s Arts Awards—recognizing his role in founding Studio S Pottery and supporting local arts.  Murfreesboro Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCS is planning to expand as kindergarten enrollment is expected to rise next year—seven schools are nearing 90% capacity and officials are reviewing options for additions or a new building with costs around $55 million. The district is coordinating with the city to track new home developments that may require rezoning to keep class sizes manageable.  Murfreesboro Post
  • Read To Succeed’s 19th Annual Celebrity Spelling Bee is set for Nov. 7 at The View at Fountains in Murfreesboro with doors opening at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the program beginning at 7:00 p.m.—ten local professionals will compete in an adult spelling bee—as fundraisers aim to raise $70,000 to support literacy programs in Rutherford County.  WGNS

  • Residents and students in Murfreesboro have raised concerns over the lack of consistent sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to use roads and grassy paths and increasing safety risks amid recent accident reports. City officials announced a new $17 million transit center will open in April—expanding bus routes and offering a more accessible public transit hub for the community.  MTSU Sidelines
  • This Saturday, the 'No Kings' rally will take place on the public sidewalk along Broad Street (behind City Hall and Linebaugh Library) instead of The Avenue because of scheduling conflicts in the shopping district.
