COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday at 1:15 p.m. amid steady rain and heavy traffic, two Murfreesboro Police Officers helped a senior whose SUV stalled on Memorial Blvd near a busy shopping complex—traffic moved slowly as passersby waited while the officers reconnected jumper cables and reassured the driver.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Preparations are underway for the 43rd annual Salute to Veterans and Armed Forces Game on November 8 at Johnny 'Red' Floyd Stadium, where a Veterans Memorial Service at 9:30 a.m. will open a lineup that includes a pre-game picnic and Raider Walk. The MTSU Daniels Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a ceremony at 9 a.m. on November 3 in Keathley University Theater.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The IRS announced that Tennessee residents have until Monday, Nov. 3 to file federal individual and business tax returns after severe storms in April and Hurricane Helene in September; this automatic extension covers many filing and payment deadlines.  The Daily News Journal
  • The City of Murfreesboro launched an interactive mapping survey as part of its Safe Streets plan to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries. Residents are invited to use the tool (developed by the Engineering Department and local consultants) to report safety issues and help prioritize projects that improve pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle safety.  Rutherford County Source
  • City Manager Darren Gore explained that the $150 million Keystone project will redevelop downtown with mixed-use housing, retail, a hotel, and $26 million in public infrastructure—plans that include moving WGNS radio by October 2026. The City Council approved key agreements on October 2 and October 23 to advance this phased redevelopment on city property.  WGNS
  • Rutherford County leaders and MTSU alumni joined with university trustees to form a committee to guide a $119 million renovation of the historic Murphy Center and create the nearby Lightning Zone district for retail and entertainment. The group met on Oct 29 and includes local figures such as the mayors of Murfreesboro and Smyrna—tasked with regularly overseeing the project.  Rutherford County Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Columbia Academy ended its football season by forfeiting its final TSSAA game scheduled for today because injuries weakened the Bulldogs’ roster — leaving them with a 1–8 overall record and a 0–5 regional record. Dr. James A. Thomas confirmed the decision on Oct. 29.  The Daily News Journal
  • High school football is in its final regular season week as TSSAA schedules games for today and Friday, October 31, with teams from Cannon, Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Maury, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Wilson and Williamson counties—ensuring a competitive finish.  Rutherford County Source
  • Can-Am announced the Derby, an off-road event that will be held on November 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Murfreesboro where professional racers, ranchers and specialists will compete on a course with mud pits, hay bale slaloms and a reimagined tractor pull. Hosted by Dale Brisby, the event will also offer live country music from Ryan Charles and The Band Loula and Southern BBQ from Fatguy Southern Kitchen while only 100 spectator spots remain available through pre-registration.  WGNS
