COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Murfreesboro volunteers Steve and Karen Hickok have volunteered with the Salvation Army for many years — they plan to join the bell ringing program this month at local store entrances to raise funds for community services, adding to decades of service that began in 1972 and 2016. The program, involving 50 volunteers at 15 locations, supports Christmas programs and year-round aid for local families.  Murfreesboro Post

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Boniface Amuzu, a longtime MTSU employee who arrived from Ghana nearly thirty years ago and rose from student-athlete to Murphy Center Complex Director, was honored with the TSSAA Distinguished Service Award for November. He oversees campus sports facilities and coordinates championship events—ensuring high school athletes receive strong support at MTSU.  WGNS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This Wednesday afternoon, December 3, Clarius Partners will lead a workshop with the Planning Commission and City Council at 4:30 p.m.—the meeting will discuss plans for Clarius Park along NW Broad and I-840 as well as new ideas for the downtown Methodist Church property. The proposals may add between 202 and 2,017 jobs while helping fund local services.  WGNS
  • Rutherford County Mayor Joe Carr suffered serious injuries in a horseback riding accident on November 28th on his farm that left him with nine broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and a partially collapsed lung as county Fire & Rescue, EMS, and law enforcement provided quick help before he received life-saving care at Ascension Saint Thomas and Vanderbilt’s Trauma Center—he later expressed gratitude for the first responders and said the experience deepened his faith and commitment to public service.  WGNS
  • The Central Tennessee Regional Solid Waste Planning Board will meet on December 1 at 6:00 p.m. in the conference room at Murfreesboro Municipal Airport’s Business Center to discuss updates to the ten-year waste management plan—focusing on recycling and diversion efforts. Community members are invited to attend and offer input on regional waste management policies.  WGNS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between November 20 and 28, 2025 the Department of Health recorded the lowest food scores in Rutherford County at four establishments — Bar Louie and Bar Louie Auxiliary Bar in Murfreesboro, Southern Spoon Commissary in Smyrna and No. 1 Chinese and Hibachi Grill in Murfreesboro. Inspection reports from routine and follow-up visits are posted at these places and can be reviewed at the county health department.  Rutherford County Source
  • Blood supplies in Murfreesboro are critically low—holiday events and heavy travel have pushed blood donations aside. The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross at 501 Memorial Boulevard thanks locals for past support and urges new donors to call for appointments so lifesaving care can continue.  WGNS
  • Rutherford County received perfect health inspection scores of 100 for food service establishments inspected from November 20th to November 28th. SPORTS NEWS

  • MTSU will face New Mexico State today at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN—MTSU aims to end its season on a winning streak after snapping a seven-game losing run with redshirt freshman Roman Gagliano leading the offense. New Mexico State, coming off a win that erased a large deficit, will look to build on its recent momentum in this final game of the season.  The Daily News Journal
  • Friday night, the Oakland Patriots defeated the Blackman Blaze 42—14 at Ray Hughes Stadium in a semifinal game under the new TSSAA playoff system, advancing to the final four. They will meet Ravenwood next Saturday in the Class 6A BlueCross Bowl.  WGNS
