COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Library System is collecting non-perishable food and pet food donations during regular business hours at branches in Murfreesboro, Eagleville, and Smyrna (donation drop-off points). Library branches will close on Dec. 24, Dec. 25, Jan. 1, and Jan. 19.  WGNS
  • Barnabas Vision is asking local residents, churches, clubs & businesses to sponsor families needing help with Christmas gifts; holiday pick-up days will run from Dec. 18 to Dec. 22 at its office off MTCS Drive to brighten the season for struggling households.  WGNS
  • On Dec. 14, Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation held a parade with Bill Allen plus a candlelit event at Cannonsburgh. The department will host holiday crafts and treats at Patterson Community Center on Dec. 19-20 and a Buy One, Get One Free pass promotion runs until Jan. 18.  WGNS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In-N-Out Burger opened its Murfreesboro restaurant on Dec. 12, adding to its new locations in Lebanon and Antioch. The fast-food chain employs about 75 associates at each site (starting wage $17.50 per hour) and offers its famous fresh, never-frozen patties.  Murfreesboro Post

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rutherford County Historical Society is hosting holiday events including a Christmas Brunch at the Ransom School House on Saturday, Dec. 20, from 9 a.m. to noon and a New Year’s Party on Jan. 3. Members are invited to a Jan. 19 meeting—annual dues must be renewed.  WGNS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A recent Rutherford County School Board meeting sparked debate over whether to allow mental health days for teachers. Some board members, including Vice Chair Frances Rosales, supported easing burnout while others argued that vague guidelines and potential political influence were a concern—discussion is expected to continue in upcoming meetings.  FOX 17

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former county leader Rhonda Allen, who served for 25-year, died Dec. 12 after an extended illness, and her funeral will be held Dec. 20 at Life Point Church in Smyrna with visitation at 10 a.m. and a memorial service at 1 p.m.; the family requests donations instead of flowers.  The Daily News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • MTSU claimed victory in its annual Bleed Blue to Beat WKU blood drive (held Oct. 27–29 in the Campus Recreation gym) as it collected 301 units of blood—over 100 more than WKU and with more than 150 first-time donors aiding life-saving efforts.  WGNS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Middle Tennessee State football hired Anthony Scelfo as offensive coordinator yesterday and named Christopher Browne as the offensive line coach. The move aims to boost the team's offense following a 3 to 9 season, as coach Derek Mason said they bring strong recruiting skills plus innovative game planning.  The Daily News Journal
